George Merrick Papers - 1899-1955

Correspondence, clippings, brochures, maps, real estate records and related papers trace the activities of George Merrick, founder of the city of Coral Gables. Most of the collection pertains to the 1930s and later years, including a substantial amount on the Dade County Planning Board.

Warranty deeds dated 1899 and 1903 for Solomon Merrick record the purchase of the original Merrick property in what would become Coral Gables and for three lots in downtown Miami.

Griffin ("Uncle George"), and an autobiographical narrative by Lena Clarke, Mrs. Warner's sister.

Clippings, correspondence, brochures, typescripts, invitations and other memorabilia trace the career of Lieutenant Colonel Earl Hoag and with it much early history of American aviation. Includes Miami High School student yearbook (Miahi 1914); a wealth of aviation clippings for 1917-1921; with much information on the 1919 transcontinental air race during which 10 out of 39 pilots were killed.

Diary is a lively and detailed account of a young girl's family and social life in early Miami. Scrapbooks are unarranged: one holds pictures clipped from magazines and some photographic prints; the other has loose material including poetry by Fannie Clemons and typed transcripts of letters with genealogical information on the Buswell and related families.

Photographs and negatives of the Drake Lumber Company show buildings, equipment, logging operations and mill workers. Also included are images of the Gaston Drake family. Includes five index pages with hand written descrptions.

The collection contains approximately 100 blueprints, augmented by architectural specifications. Blueprints include those from Keihnel & Elliott’s original design for the Gilbert residence (1926), alterations made by Robert Law Reed & Associates (1948) and an addition made by Manfred Ungaro (1962).

The files contain notes, invoices, receipts and ephemera concerning appliances and building work.  Box 1 contains records belonging to Mrs. Gilbert and Box 2 holds the papers of Dr. and Mrs. Hanna.

The collection also contains books and magazines published by the Women’s Press. Also encompassed in the collection are newspaper clippings and scrapbooks.

Miami Pioneers Inc. records - 1936-1994

The Miami Pioneers Club collection consists primarily of  records pertaining to the group’s general operations since its formation in 1937 up to the 1990s, with the majority of the documentation dating from the 1940s-1960s. Among the records are minutes, financial documents, charters and by-laws, lease and insurance records, newspaper clippings, correspondence, event programs and other ephemera, bond stub books, and scrapbooks. Tax records, invoices, newsletters, board information, and data relating to ownership and maintenance of the clubhouse and marina dockage are also included.

Of particular value to genealogists and other researchers are the membership lists and applications which detail the family histories of early Miami residents. Two card files list names, addresses, and phone numbers of club members. Also contained in the collection are applications for membership and yearbooks from the Miami Pioneer Descendants.

The photographic prints include images of  Miami Pioneer Club activities, members, and the marina dockage, as well as historical prints of  Florida sites and reproductions of historical prints of the Kitchell family. Some of the photographs of Miami Pioneers Club members and activities are attached to 11 x 14 poster board with newspaper clippings glued underneath them.

Three scrapbooks, dating from 1968 to 1991, contain newspaper clippings, photographic prints, cards, and other ephemera. Ten audio cassette tapes hold recordings of club meetings at which guest speakers presented programs on various historical persons, places, and events. A large poster-sized family tree of the Shelley family is also contained in the collection. Also included are completed family tree forms which The Miami Pioneers Club distributed to its members in order to consolidate the documentation of early Miami families. Histories of Eastern Airlines and Fort Dallas are also part of this collection.

Photographic prints with corresponding negatives of one and two-story single and multiple family residential buildings in Dade County. The buildings are for the most part small-scale examples of Mediterranean revival, mission revival, bungalow, and vernacular architectural styles. The largest grouping falls into the mission revival category, with some examples combining mission revival, pueblo, and Moorish detailing. Among the vernacular structures, there are both frame and masonry examples.
