In November 1956, a group of 82 revolutionaries led by Fidel Castro, sailed for Cuba from Tuxpan, Mexico, on the yacht Granma to launch a revolutionary war against the regime of Fulgencio Batista. Most were killed (the "martirs" in this volume) or captured. Fewer than 20 escaped into the Sierra Maestra mountains. This commemorative booklet was probably published shortly after Castro assumed control of Cuba.

The Biscayne Bay House of Refugee was designated in 1876 as Station 5, District 7 of the Life-Saving Service, the predecessor of the Coast Guard. Located on Miami Beach at 72nd Street, the station ceased operations in 1927 after being damaged beyond repair by the 1926 hurricane. Lawrence F. Tuten took charge of the station in 1917 and served until 1926 when it was wrecked by the hurricane. Tuten moved up to Station 6 in Fort Lauderdale and was later involved in the capture and hanging of the rum runner Horace Alderman.

Thousands of Mariel refugees were flown from Key West and processed at Eglin Air Force Base in 1980. The Cuban Relief Fund was founded in Titusville (Fla.) to assist the collecting efforts of St. Theresa Catholic Church in providing financial and other assistance to the refugees.

Todd M. May and Jeffery A. Delsol were married by Circuit Court Judge Sarah Zabel on January 5, 2015 in Miami. They were the second couple to be married in Miami on the afternoon that the ban on same-sex marriage was overturned in the state of Florida. Completed in 1952, the bridge was originally a Hanover Skew bascule bridge, and the moveable span was fixed circa 1975, such that current FDOT records list its design as a fixed girder-floorbeam or girder-floorbeam-stringer type. The bridge was determined eligible for listing in the National Register. It is slated for replacement.

Oscar T. Conklin and Edith H. Mercier were married in Miami June 11, 1905. His 1907 diary as excerpted by his daughter records the life of a young husband and father--with a fine voice: he lists a number of occasions where he sang solos, including one at Royal Palm Hotel in front of 1200 persons. He was also a journalist who came to Florida to work for the Florida East Coast Hotel Company, later moving to the Miami Herald, where by 1911 he was general manager.

Chads became controversial in the 2000 presidential elections. They are small pieces of paper that are punched out of ballots as voters record their selection at the voting machines. The irregularity of voting procedures in terms of counting chads became part of a protracted struggle between presidential candidates, Al Gore and George W. Bush.
