George Johnston was master of the schooner Spring Bird. This receipt in his hand is dated at New Providence, which may have been his home port in the Bahamas.
In November 1956, a group of 82 revolutionaries led by Fidel Castro, sailed for Cuba from Tuxpan, Mexico, on the yacht Granma to launch a revolutionary war against the regime of Fulgencio Batista. Most were killed (the "martirs" in this volume) or captured. Fewer than 20 escaped into the Sierra Maestra mountains. This commemorative booklet was probably published shortly after Castro assumed control of Cuba.
Thousands of Mariel refugees were flown from Key West and processed at Eglin Air Force Base in 1980. The Cuban Relief Fund was founded in Titusville (Fla.) to assist the collecting efforts of St. Theresa Catholic Church in providing financial and other assistance to the refugees.
Completed in 1952, the bridge was originally a Hanover Skew bascule bridge, and the moveable span was fixed circa 1975, such that current FDOT records list its design as a fixed girder-floorbeam or girder-floorbeam-stringer type. The bridge was determined eligible for listing in the National Register. It is slated for replacement.
