In the lower Everglades, homesteads and settlements grew on bays and
navigable creeks. The Everglades' first white settlers lived in remote
places, surrounded by wilderness. There, frontier men and women made a
living through subsistence farming, hunting, fishing, trading posts, and
charcoal making.
