Scope and Contents: Newspaper clippings (primarily from The Miami Herald and The Miami News), correspondence and photographic prints trace the creation of the Miami River Committee, forerunner of the Miami River Advisory Board, and the drive to clean up the river that lead to county government involvement and the City of Miami's clean-up barge, "Mrs. Clean."
Biographical Note: The person known as Kate Thornhill was famous in Miami as the "Lady Stevedore," who was successful in a number of business ventures and who spearheaded the cleanup and restoration of the Miami River. She lobbied for the formation of the Miami River Advisory Board and served as its chairwoman for more than a decade
