Historical Note: John Thomas arrived in the Miami area from England as an adventurer in 1863. John Thomas Peacock homesteaded in Coconut Grove and held a variety of county offices, including Dade County Sheriff, Tax Assessor from 1879-1881, and Road Commissioner in 1890. John Thomas,  popularly known as Jolly Jack gave his name to Jack's Bight, which later became Coconut Grove.
